Understanding and Analysis
Analysis and project are not two independent components, on the contrary, they interpenetrate and merge through the development of the restoration project, in which the knowledge of the architectural text and the diagnosis of its condition lead the project, and consequently the execution.
UNDERSTANDING I° LEVEL
(understanding of the artefact geometry)
Inspection and preliminary report
Reconnaissance form
Preliminary report
Survey
Land survey
Digital survey by laser scanning technology
Photogrammetric survey
Critical-descriptive architectural survey
Photographic survey
Critical-structural survey
Masonry analysis and survey
Chromatic value survey
UNDERSTANDING II° LEVEL
(knowledge and understanding of the artefact “evolutionary history”, as well as the transformative processes through a direct path: stratigraphic interpretation-analysis and an indirect one: analysis of historical and archival sources)
Archeological analysis
S.U. survey-mapping and related reports
Stratigraphic diagram
Historical analysis
Bibliographic research
Archival research
Iconographic research
Historical-critical report
UNDERSTANDING III° LEVEL
(critical analysis of the artefact)
Structure analysis
Static-structural and constructive model
Physical-mechanical characteristics of the structures
Distributional analysis
UNDERSTANDING IV° LEVELS
(analysis of the “health conditions” of the architectural artefact)
Analysis of building materials and construction techniques
Technical data sheets of the material analysis and related construction techniques
Graphical mapping of building materials
Defects analysis: instabilities, alterations and degradation
Types of instability chart and analysis of the related causes (chart and synthetic schemes of damages and vulnerability)
Graphical survey- mapping of all the cracks and deformations
Technical-descriptive report of the artefact structural instabilities
Identification and analysis (direct and instrumental) of alteration structures and degradation of materials indication
Degradation and alteration structure technical data sheets
Graphical survey-mapping of alteration and degradation phenomena
Project
The restoration project of an architectural artefact cannot coincide with the only historical/critical analysis or with the other analyses (from the field survey to the scientific analysis). These are tools and means of knowledge, but the restoration project must also understand the technological and scientific research.
PROJECT I
(restoration)
Determination of compatible operating criteria
Delineating methods suitable for the maintenance of the structural design of the building
Defining methods suitable for the maintenance of the technical characteristics of the materials
Outlining a general diagnostic framework
Structural consolidation – project
Classifying categories of works for the elimination of instabilities and their causes
Preservation of the materials – project
Defining categories of works for the elimination of alteration and degradation of the materials as well as the structures
PROJECT II
(re-use)
Checking compatibility
Comparison of the historical, environmental, architectural, static-structural analysis and socio-economic assessment of the built
Evaluation of the building “purpose of use”, a test of the project functional hypothesis in comparison with the compatibility and adaptation to previous uses
Distributive-functional project
Technological systems project
Training
The aim is to make the trainees acquire the ability to synthesize information as well as conceptual and operational tools necessary to operate consciously on the monumental architectural heritage
Objectives
RestauroItalia Ltd provide students with methodological and operational tools concerning the “building history”, the processes of materials degradation, collapse of structures, as well as diagnostic investigations and intervention procedures for the protection, conservation and enhancement of the historical building heritage.
Topics
Presentation of the subject in the light of the latest acquisitions, in the context of a larger interdisciplinary field
Evolution of the concept of restoration
Collection of information, organization of archives, statistical processing of data on a thematic basis
Audits and inspections, criteria and operational aspects
Fraphic survey and preventive documentation, survey and documentation update during the work
Historical research, evolution of sites and artifacts, relationship with the chronology
Diagnostics through empirical methodologies and scientific instruments
Technical-scientific investigations in situ and in laboratory: the non-destructive analysis
Materials and local building resources, construction techniques and traditional procedures for the restoration
Tests on building materials
Materials degradation diseases and collapse of structures
Degradation/instability and evolution over time, evaluation of future developments
“Sample” investigations and statistical processing of data on a thematic basis
Specialized and interdisciplinary investigations
Intervention procedures, case studies and regulations
Routine maintenance and emergency interventionts
